Why AI projects fail in SMEs (and how to avoid it)
By Johannes Jäger, CEO & Founder
Most small businesses have already tried something with AI. A tool here, a ChatGPT experiment there. And many come away underwhelmed. That is rarely down to the technology. It is almost always the same avoidable mistakes. Here are the four most common ones, and how to sidestep them.
Mistake 1: no clear use case
"We want to do something with AI" is not a project, it is a wish. Start without a concrete, measurable workflow and you get lost in gimmicks. The way out: begin with the one workflow that provably costs the most time. Which one that is is covered in which workflows to automate first.
Mistake 2: a tool instead of a system
A chatbot nobody uses, or a tool that does not talk to your other systems, delivers no value. AI only pays off once it is embedded in an end to end workflow, from the trigger to the handover to a human.
Mistake 3: you own nothing
Many projects end up in rented no-code setups that cost every month, are hard to adapt and do not belong to you. The moment things get more complex or the vendor raises prices, you hit a wall. Build something you own instead. The comparison is in build custom or use no-code.
Mistake 4: no partner, no plan
Without someone to build the system, integrate it and hand it over, the project fizzles out between day to day work and good intentions. A turnkey approach with a fixed scope, a fixed price and a clean handover prevents exactly that.
